Donna De Lory interview on That's Kentertainment!
Posted: 29 April 2005

Madonna's long-time backing singer Donna De Lory was interviewed for That's Kentertainment - here is a transcript on the segment of the interview where she talks about Madonna. You can watch a clip at www.thatskentertainment.com

Ken: Then you went on to do demos and of course, that's how you ended up touring with Madonna....with 'Open Your Heart'.
Donna: Madonna....yeah....you're like, 'With Madonna....?' (Laughs) Yeah, I did this demo. A boyfriend of mine at the time Garner Cole wrote this song, he gave it to her with his voice on it, and she said 'No' and then he went to me and said, 'Will you sing it?' so I sang it, did my thing, and then she took the song, made it a huge hit - which was good for him because it made him a millionaire. And then....in return for that I got an introduction to her producer Pat Leonard and got to meet her and tour with her.
Ken: OK, so here you are, every night, with thousands of fans screaming and yelling and going nuts, and then you come and you play these great shows, you know, at Yoga places....for you, is the charge almost kind of the same or is it a totally different kind of thing, becuase you're still performing.
Donna: It's so different different, really, because it's my voice and my expression, and, it's a totally different experience. As far as that I'm singing and I get a chance to touch people and reach people and do what I love to do, that's the same. I felt like, you know, my voice is obviously more powerful on my own. In her....I mean, there are so many elements to her show and I'm just one of them, which is great because it's nice to be part of something so amazing. I mean, I love both, you know? It's a great day job! (Laughs)
It supports me being able to bring my band out and play these clubs and rent a big white van and do all this and promote myself, so it's kind of - they work together. And it's interesting because definitely Madonna's influenced me. I started doing yoga a few years ago and she was always there doing poses and she was an inspiration, definitely.
Ken: I see you have the....
Donna: Red string, yeah. (Laughs) Now, how do you know about this red string?
Ken: Now, it's supposed to protect you from 'The Evil Eye'?
Donna: Yeah, I think it's more of....to me it's more of a reminder of protecting from the negativity....my own negativity. So, it's kind of a reminder to be positive and just seeing the light in everything.
Ken: I saw some people even at the concert wearing that and I thought, 'Now were they into that before....?'
Donna: '....wait a second, where they trying to impress her'....yeah....(Laughs)
Ken: (Laughs) Is that what it is? (Laughs)
Donna: (Laughs) No, no no - no, not at all....I know....people have said that. I mean, who knows? To each his own and if that's someone's path....these are teachings that she's studying right now and she shared them with us and they're great teachings. You know, I appreciate the turth in all kinds of forms and many paths, so, I check it all out - it's great.

Truth Or Dare Screening: She had a lot to prove
Posted: 28 April 2005

madonnalicious visitor Ryan attended the Truth Or Dare screening in Los Angeles last night. The screening was introduced by Luis Camacho, one of the Blond Ambition dancers, who spoke about working with Madonna and how he got the job on the tour. Here is Ryan's great account of last night:

I was only 12 when this movie came out, so my parents did not let me see it in the theatres. I've seen it as an adult, but it is AMAZING how different it is when viewed on the big screen. The concert footage, in brilliant color, makes you feel like you're actually there. I found it interesting that Express Yourself in the movie was dubbed with the album version vocals....I guess she didn't like her live voice on that song.

There was a special guest to introduce the movie....Luis Camacho, one of the more visible backup dancers on the Blond Ambition tour, as well as in the Vogue video. I remember seeing him in Truth or Dare years ago and feeling alienated by how flamboyant he was about his sexuality. I must say he has improved greatly with age....he was very attractive and well-spoken. He didn't seem to have scripted his introduction....he just spoke from the heart about his experiences on the tour.
He told of how he and his friends made a home-movie showing their dance moves, including Vogue-ing, which was popular in gay clubs at the time. His best friend's boyfriend was somehow connected to Debi Mazar, who got the video to Madonna. He said she saw it, loved it, and called him personally as soon as she'd seen it. He had a contract to perform in some other show, but she didn't want to wait for him to be available, so she bought him out of the contract and flew him immediately out to LA to start rehearsals for the tour. He said he still keeps in touch with her, but it is sporadic because she is so busy now.

He says he is often asked if she was a bitch. He says that at that point in her career she had a lot to prove. She had never undertaken such a huge project before, and with this tour she wanted the best costumes, the best sets, the best choreography. He says she acted like an extremely driven person who knew what she wanted, and if that seemed like a bitch, then so be it. But, he also mentioned what a hard worker she was. She would get up before any of the dancers and after rehearsal, she'd head to band practice or other activities. He says she went to bed long after the rest of the crew was asleep.
I really appreciated what he had to say, and it was a great surprise that he was there for the screening.

On a more personal note, he mentioned how self-centered he was back when the movie was originally released and how he was more concerned about fitting into his Valentino cat suit than inviting his mother to the premiere. He flew his mom and some other family members all the way from New York to be present for the screening tonight, as a way of making up to them that they didn't attend the premiere. That seemed very meaningful and moving.

After the movie, Amoeba records hosted a Madonna karaoke. There were some amazing performers (and some lousy ones as well). There an open bar, which made the lousy karaoke singers more bearable. What a fun night!

Here is picture of Ryan (on the left), Luis and Ryan's friend Raoul (on the right).

Liz Rosenberg defends her girl against director
Posted: 27 April 2005 - From MSNBC's The Scoop

Famed director Norman Jewison isn’t wowed by Madonna’s talent. In a recent diatribe against today’s stars, the director of such films as 'Moonstruck' and 1967’s landmark 'Heat of the Night,' singled out the Material Girl for criticism.
'It’s all a hype. Come on. How do you know whether anybody can act? You’re told that they’re a big star, you know, or somebody’s got a cute ass or they’ve got great boobs,' Jewison ranted to the Vancouver Sun. He singled out Madonna as a celebrity with 'a small amount of talent.'
'We’re all being suffocated,' he said. 'I can’t believe that people are obsessed like they are now with celebrity. I don’t know what’s going on.'
'I’m sorry to hear that a director whom I hold in such high esteem would have such small regard for my client,' Madonna’s spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg told The Scoop. 'I completely disagree with his statement about Madonna making a lot out of a little talent. I don’t think you can sell 100 million records and sell out arenas and stadiums for over 20 years just being a celebrity. Madonna is a Golden Globe winner and a Grammy winner and has had an unprecedented career as an artist....Glad to know people are still talking shots at my girl. I was beginning to worry.'

New Kids on the Block star inspired by Madonna
Posted: 27 April 2005

Former New Kids On The Block singer Jordan Knight credits Madonna with giving him the confidence to make a comeback - because she's proved age is no barrier in the pop industry.
The 1990s star - who recently tasted fame again by appearing in US reality TV show The Surreal Life - is desperate to launch a solo career, and refuses to view his 34 years as an obstacle.
He says, 'Look at Madonna. She's in her forties and she's still making good music. It's a tough industry, but I've done it before and I'll do it again.'

Madonna to join Puss In Boots cast?
Posted: 26 April 2005 - From contactmusic.com

Pop icon Madonna has agreed to lend her voice to upcoming animated adventure Puss In Boots - a spin-off from the Shrek series based around Antonio Banderas' feline swashbuckler alter-ego.
The Into The GRroove singer has been keen to try her hand at something new after dabbling in acting and writing children's books - and she jumped at the chance to voice her own character.
A Hollywood insider tells British newspaper The Sun, 'Madonna fancied doing something completely different and this sounded like so much fun. She is a fan of Shrek and thought Antonio was the best thing about the sequel.'
'She has two young children and sees how much they love the films. Madonna is also friends with Mike Myers and respects him. He told her Puss would be a hit and she trusts his judgement.'

Penn is now delighted to report he enjoys a friendly relationship with Madonna thanks to his Princess Bride wife.
He recalls, 'When I got together with Robin, things changed. She was also very good at getting me to deal with memories of my first wife.'

Madonna sued over 'failed payment' to director
Posted: 22 April 2005 - From contactmusic.com / New York Post - thanks to Eric

A British director and several British companies involved in the creation of Madonna's European TV concert special have sued the singer, alleging she still owes more than $300,000 in directing and production fees.
The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, alleges that Madonna owes director Hamish Hamilton and The Rude Corp. $175,000 for work on a TV special of the singer's 2004 European 'Re-Invention Tour.'
Madonna's publicist, Liz Rosenberg, didn't immediately return a call for comment Thursday.
Hamilton alleges in the lawsuit that he traveled to shows in New York, Florida, California, Nevada, France and England as part of his contract and scouted locations in Portugal for the TV special.
The lawsuit also alleges that Madonna owes Done and Dusted Ltd. more than $155,000 for expenses incurred during preproduction and production work on the program.

Hamilton maintains he then filmed a dress rehearsal in Manchester, England, and footage from the singer's show in London, before scouting locations in Portugal for a planned TV special that never happened.

This is regarding the planned CBS TV special that was due to air from Lisbon, but which failed to materialise. Hamish Hamilton previously directed Madonna on her live HBO Drowned World tour broadcast and the DVD release of that tour.

Sean Penn speaks: I was an angry young man
Posted: 21 April 2005 - From contactmusic.com

Actor Sean Penn has concluded his marriage to Madonna collapsed under the strain of their equally bad behaviour.
The Mystic River star, 44, admits his desire to stay out of the limelight mixed with Madonna's quest for international superstardom was a damaging combination, one which ultimately led to their divorce in 1989, after a turbulent four-year union.
And while Penn - who's now married to Robin Wright Penn - accepts his wildman, angry reputation at the time was justified, Madonna was not the innocent victim of his rage.
He says, 'She was in the process of becoming the biggest star in the world. I just wanted to make my films and hide.'
'I was an angry young man. I had a lot demons and don't really know who could've lived with me at the time. I was just as badly behaved as her, so I can't point the finger of blame.'

Cannes do or don't?
Posted: 18 April 2005

An article last week in the anti-Madonna UK newspaper The Daily Mail started a rumour that Madonna's Re-Invented Process tour documentary was not good enough and had been turned down by the schedulers at the Cannes Film Festival where it was hoped that it would be premiered next month.
The Daily Mail also suggested that Jonas Akerlund is re-editing the film and that it is hoped to be premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2005!

This rumour was then picked up by the rest on the online news media and is now being reported as fact, however either way the truth will be revealed tomorrow when the official program for the Cannes Film Festival is announced.

Insiders have said to madonnalicious that there have been many, many changes from the original concept of the film, and it now reflects Madonna's current state in life. Madonna herself said in her ICON letter to fans that the film 'starts out being a film about me and my life on tour and ends up being a story about Humanity.'

Interestingly the film is not being produced through Maverick or Warners Brothers.

Posted: 15 April 2005 - Thanks to skallywaggle

The new issue of ICON is just reaching US fanclub members and as usual it contains a letter from Madonna to her fans:

Dear Fans,

Happy New Year! 2005 is a great year already. I had a relaxing holiday with my family and was happy that my husband and I finally had two weeks off at the same time and were able to be together with our children.
I have been back in the studio writing new songs for several different projects. Should I do a musical?? Should I record another album? Stay tuned to find out what I decide to do....
All of my projects are labours of love, however, my book series is particularly dear to me as all of the proceeds go to the Spirituality for Kids Foundation. My final book in the series, Lotsa de Casha, will be out in June. And the English Roses Collection has been doing well at retail and I am thrilled about the look of the Fall '05 line which I have just finished designing. It is just another reminder to always look for new ways to be creative and to never stop reinventing yourself.
Speaking of Reinvention, upcoming is the release of the tour documentary which I have been working on tirelessly with the director Jonas Akerlund. It starts out being a film about me and my life on tour and ends up being a story about Humanity.
I am very excited about it and hope to premiere it at the Cannes Film Festival.

Take Care,
Work hard,
Be Brave!

Mum-of-two Madonna, 46, doesn't even have the excuse that she was battling Arctic conditions. She wore the fluffy parka on her way back from a Pilates class in north London

Clarification on the Mother and Father release
Posted: 14 April 2005

Following on from yesterday's story about the Mother and Father remix being released to US radio, madonnalicious has now been informed of the following information:

When a single is released to the 'Billboard DJs,' they mean the dance club DJs that report to the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart - not mainstream U.S. radio stations.

Meaning that Warners have officially released the song to US clubs but not to US radio.

Stars prove they're crazy for Madge
Posted: 11 April 2005 - From Yahoo! News (UK and Ireland)

Soap stars are to appear in an ITV1 show paying tribute to pop icon Madonna. And it seems many like nothing better than showing off their own musical prowess.
Several have turned up on Stars in Their Eyes in the past, while Kim Medcalf (EastEnders' Sam Mitchell) and Coronation Street's Debra Stephenson (Frankie Baldwin) appeared in Celebrity Fame Academy.
Not to be outdone, some of the lads from Coronation Street appeared in tribute show Queen Mania.
Just a week later, on April 16, ITV1 is broadcasting Madonna Mania, which will feature some of the singer's earliest TV appearances as well as rare footage of the Material Girl in action.
It should be enough to keep the most die-hard fan happy, but that's not all the programme has in store. A host of famous faces will also be on hand to reveal what they love about Madonna.
Among those appearing will be Corrie's Samia Ghadie (Maria Sutherland) Nikki Sanderson (Candice Stowe) and Jane Danson (Leanne Battersby).
Various Emmerdale cast members, including Emily Symons, who plays Woolpack landlady Louise Appleton, and Sammy Winward (Katy Addyman) have also been lined up to discuss Madge's songs, videos, image changes and sexuality.
Non-soap stars cropping up during the evening's entertainment include Tony Blackburn, Emma Forbes and James Hewitt.

Madonnamania airs on ITV1 on Saturday 16 April at 9.10pm - followed by an extra show on ITV2 at 10.10pm which will feature lots of extra footage.

Do you work here?
Posted: 07 April 2005 - From contactmusic.com

Pop beauty Madonna was mistaken for a receptionist when British author James Jackson paid her visit to her director husband Guy Ritchie's office to deliver a script. The aspiring scribe failed to recognise the Papa Don't Preach icon when he met her in person and asked if she would make him a cup of tea - only to be embarrassed when her identity was finally revealed.
He says, 'I went into the office and there was a small lady sitting in a chair, so I asked her for a cup of tea.'
'When I later found out it was Madonna, I was just a little bit embarrassed! I did wonder why she looked a bit vague when I asked her.'

Madonna can't comprehend her children
Posted: 07 April 2005 - From contactmusic.com

Pop icon Madonna struggles to understand her two young children properly, because they speak to each other in French.
Lourdes, eight, and four-year-old Rocco both attend London's Lycee Francais school where they study the gallic language - but the Like A Virgin singer and her Snatch director husband Guy Ritchie have no knowledge of French.
The children's grandfather John Ritchie says, 'Rocco is certainly picking up a lot of French. He speaks it all the time at home because Lourdes is fluent. They talk to each other in French all day, chatting away to each other non-stop.'
'It's very funny. Neither Guy nor Madonna speak the language so they cannot understand anything the children are saying. They haven't a clue. It's almost like the kids have their own secret language.'

Madonna's rep answered back to this story in the New York Post Page Six gossip column by saying: 'The kids are teaching her French, so all will soon be tres bien.'

More on Revolver
Posted: 04 April 2005

More stories are surfacing that Madonna had her role cut out of Guy Ritchie's latest film Revolver. Contactmusic.com published this story but it all seems to be an excuse to criticise Madonna's acting:

Madonna has been cut out of husband Guy Ritchies's latest movie - after shooting a cameo role as a female crime boss.
The blonde superstar, who endured scathing reviews for her cinematic collaboration with spouse Ritchie in 2002's Swept Away, flew to England's Isle of Man last November to film her appearance in gangster movie Revolver - but has failed to make the final edit.
A source says, 'Perhaps Guy did not want Madonna's kiss of death on his latest movie, or perhaps he just decided the scene wasn't quite right, but either way Madonna does not make the final cut.'
'She did fly to the Isle of Man and spent a lot of time on the set.'

However as Guy himself said in an interview with film magazine Empire, Madonna was never involved with his film.
The rumours of Madonna filming seem to have started from the Isle of Man (where some of the film was shot) local press talking to locals who had seen her on the film set, but all she was probably doing was only visiting husband Guy.

The Sunday Times Rich List 2005
Posted: 03 April 2005

UK newspaper The Sunday Times published it's annual rich list, looking at the wealthiest people who live in the UK. Madonna and Guy came in at number 208 with a wealth of £235 million - which is up from last years total of £215 million.

Madonna, 46, who lives in London, Wiltshire and Beverly Hills with her film director husband Ritchie, 36, had a successful return to the live stage last year. Her Re-Invention tour was seen by 900,000 people in Europe and North America, and its gross earnings confounded critics who reckoned her best years were behind her. They were good years, too: from 1986 to 1993, Madonnas total earnings were about £125 million, according to Forbes annual survey of entertainers' wealth.
Ritchie is working on another gangster film, Revolver, hoping to emulate the success of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. With her tour receipts, advertising work and the sale of her stake in Maverick Records to Warner Brothers for about £10 million, our rock expert reckons we can raise the couples wealth to £235m this year.

With a wealth of £235 million, Madonna was also named as the UK's 18th wealthiest woman, and Madonna and Guy are the 5th wealthiest in music and 3rd wealthiest in film and TV.
