Britney's kiss of life
Posted: 31 August 2003

From the Daily Star Sunday:
Silver-tongued Britney Spears talked Madonna and Christina into their sizzling threesome - to give her career the kiss of life.
The top-totty trio left millions of TV viewers around the world stunned with their lusty French kissing session at Thursday night's MTV Vide Music Awards.
And today we can reveal that 21-year-old Britney - who has spent much of her career claiming to be a virgin - was the brains behind the saucy lesbian snog-fest. Britney - who has been recently working on vamping up her image - put the idea into the famously raunchy Madge and Christina during rehearsals.
Mum-of-two Madonna - who has spent two decades shocking the record-buying public with her on-stage antics - instantly agreed.
While 'Dirrty' star Christina was also more than happy to oblige.
Britney hopes that the temperature-raising performance has gone a long way to finally shaking off her girl next door image. And she hopes that it will end up boosting sales of her forthcoming album and world tour.
An MTV source said: 'We realised that Britney has been trying to sex-up her image recently, but this was out of this world. She took the girls to one side at rehearsals and put the idea forward. The other two were more than happy to take part because they knew how much attention it would get - and thought it would be a good laugh. But it was a major departure for Britney because she had this girl next door tag. But she wants to show she's more of a woman than a girl - and she's certainly showed them that!'

Madonna, Lourdes, Guy and Rocco arriving on the Isle of Bute Madonna shipped in for Stella's wedding
Posted: 30 August 2003

From Ananova.com:
Madonna has arrived aboard a small Scottish ferry for what is thought to be one of the biggest celebrity weddings of the year.
She was one of host of celebrities ferried onto the Scottish island of Bute ahead of the tightly-guarded wedding of designer Stella McCartney.
Madonna, husband Guy Ritchie and at least one of their children, as well as model Kate Moss, Chrissie Hynde, and Coldplay's Chris Martin were aboard a CalMac ferry which pulled into Rothesay harbour at around 7.35pm.
The stars were then driven in two blacked-out Range Rovers to nearby Mount Stuart where it is understood Miss McCartney will celebrate her wedding tomorrow.
However, it is still unclear where the wedding service itself will be held or whether Miss McCartney, 31, is on the island.
It is thought she may be married to husband-to-be Alasdhair Willis on the Mull of Kintyre, a favourite haunt of her father Sir Paul and her mother the late Linda McCartney, then flown on to Mount Stuart for the reception.

Who's That Flower Girl?
Posted: 29 August 2003

While the press go wild for Madonna's threesome with Britney and Christina, none of them have seemed to notice that Madonna's daughter Lourdes was also performing on stage.
Lourdes and a friend were the two flower girls at the wedding ceremony and they came complete with BOY TOY buckles!

Really Britney, Madonna's old enough to be your mother!
Posted: 29 August 2003

From the Evening Standard (available in London only):
In front of millions of television viewers - and a stunned live audience of superstars - Madonna today exchanged passionate French kisses on stage with fellow pop stars Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
Her impromptu display at MTV's 20th annual Video Music Awards momentarily shocked celebrities at New York's Radio City Music Hall into silence before they recovered and roared their approval.
Madonna - who at 45 is more than twice the age of Britney and Christina - pounced on the pair while her six-year-old daughter, Lourdes, was on stage and husband Guy Ritchie, who has already complained his wife shows off her body in public too much for his liking, sat in the audience.
MTV cameras immediately cut to a close-up of Spears's former boyfriend Justin Timberlake looking distinctly uncomfortable.
The trio were performing a number which started with Lourdes walking on stage with a friend dressed as flower girls at a wedding.
Spears, 21, and Aguilera, 22, then made an entrance from a giant wedding cake, dressed in wedding gowns and knee-length white boots.
They ripped off their dresses and sang Madonna's hit Like A Virgin before she emerged from the cake dressed as the groom in top hat, tails and black boots.
Towards the end of her song Hollywood, Madonna pulled off a garter from Aguilera's right leg, gave Spears a French kiss and then kissed Aguilera on the lips. They were joined by rapper Missy Elliott before leaving the stage.
One MTV producer said: 'It was sensational, but I wonder what the good folk in places like Provo, Utah state, would make of it. Middle America is not gonna let this one go lightly.'
Timberlake said: 'I am not saying anything about it - that's how I get into trouble.'
But Duran Duran singer Simon Le Bon said: 'I wish it was me she was snogging.'
American comedian Chris Rock, who presented the show for the third time, said: 'That kiss was good, but where was mine?'
The MTV Video Awards were celebrating their 20th year. Avril Lavigne, P Diddy, 50 Cent, Eminem, Kelly Osbourne, Mary J Blige, Coldplay, Ashanti and Beyonce Knowles were all present but still Madonna stole the limelight.

Madonna skips her own party and heads home to London
Posted: 29 August 2003

Attendees of the party included Ingrid Casares, Nicole Kidman, Ben Stiller, Q-Tip, P. Diddy, Kim Cattrall, Britney Spears, Fred Durst and Pamela Anderson.

Two virgin brides for Madonna!
Posted: 29 August 2003

Madonna both wowed and shocked New York City last night at the MTV VMA's - by kissing both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera in a performance of Like A Virgin and Hollywood. They were later joined on stage by Missy Elliott to complete the quartet.

The performance began with Britney dressed in a wedding dress (complete with BOY TOY buckle) standing on top of a wedding cake, she was then joined by Christina who was also wearing a wedding dress, they sang Like A Virgin as in a homage to Madonna's version at the 1984 MTV VMA's, and then Madonna appeared at the top of the wedding cake dressed all in black and sang Hollywood.

Madonna walked down the cake and joined Britney and Christina, they kissed, and then Madonna called Missy to join them with a Yo, yo, yo, who'd that be? and Missy sang some of her hit song Work It.

This performance has totally blown away all other press coverage of the award show, and over the next few days Madonnalicious will be bringing you the British press' reaction to the show.

Liz Smith on Madonna and the VMA's
Posted: 28 August 2003

From the New York Post:
Time flies! Tonight the MTV Video Music Awards celebrates it's 20th anniversary. (Even though the first show actually aired in 1984, they are calling this a 20-year landmark - listen, I don't get modern music, so how can I keep track of modern arithmetic?) On hand will be Madonna, who appeared on the premiere broadcast, rolling around onstage singing 'Like a Virgin' in a wedding dress. At the time, cultural nabobs predicted the apocalypse. Seems pretty innocent now - just as Elvis' charming hip-twitching was supposed to turn everybody into a pillar of salt back in the '50s, and didn't.
So who knew Madonna would be eternal? Not even this columnist, long rumored to be on Madonna's payroll. (Actually, I can no longer even get her on the phone.) In 1984, I thought her a ratty-haired sex-pot flash-in-the-pan. When she appeared on the cover of Time magazine the next year, I asked my office staff, 'Why?!' But by 1986, we were the first to tout her for 'Evita,' which she finally filmed in 1997. There was no denying her charisma, artistic vision, ambition and marvelous self-confidence. I have seen nothing like it since Barbra Streisand.
In two decades, Madonna has transformed from voluptuous pop tart to sinewy icon, from sexual outlaw to almost-staid wife and mother of two. She's changed but she hasn't, remaining true to her muse - herself. 'I am my own creation. I am my own work of art,' she once declared.
Some might say tonight represents a full circle. But for Madonna the circle is never complete. There are always new thresholds, new anatomies.

Britney Spears has splashed on two £10,000 rings for Madonna and J.Lo to apologise for pulling out of a gig with them.

But when Britney heard that J.Lo was considering pulling out because of filming commitments she decided leave Madonna to sing on her own.
A source close to Britney told the Daily Star: 'She just wants to watch Madonna go for it.'
'She wanted to buy each woman a ring as a small gesture to say how much she was honoured to have been asked to sing with them.'
Britney will still grace the stage at the world famous Radio City Hall in New York during the event to present awards.

'He immediately got on his Vespa scooter to get it from an elderly Chinese woman in Kilburn.' Del Bono is the model of discretion when I ask him about it: 'We have done lots for Madonna,' he says.

Minding the gap....generation gap, that is
Posted: 13 August 2003

From the Chicago Tribune by Wendy Navratil:
If anyone doubts whether Madonna, a 44-year-old mother of two, can still bridge the generation gap, an unscientific sidewalk survey last week in Chicago offers some reassurance.
'I personally can still relate to her,' Elizabeth Middleton said.
'She has everything. She's beautiful, she's sexy - and she has the money,' Sandra Arriaza said.
This from a 23-year-old and 27-year-old, respectively, in Lincoln Park.
'Forty isn't old anymore,' another respondent, Rose Cullen, 45, explained. 'In fact, I can relate to her more now than in the era of the '80s, when she was so over the top.'
Carri Rotar, 38, agreed: 'She has grown up.'
Heidi Cordes, 30, a visual merchandise manager at a Gap store in Champaign who was in Chicago for a meeting, said the posters pairing Madonna with Missy Elliott are a stroke of genius.
'Missy Elliott is the name for all the kids right now,' she said - just as Madonna was when Cordes was a kid. 'I got to dress like her, on Saturdays only.'
Posters combining the two icons not only stop window-shoppers in their tracks, Cordes said, they've also started debates among Gap employees inside.
'They're not going to throw them away when (the campaign) is over,' Cordes said. 'The whole staff is fighting over who can keep them.'

We're always there for Madonna - Interview with a Rabbi
Posted: 12 August 2003

UK newspaper The Daily Telegraph published an interview by Michael Shelden with Madonna's Kabbalah teacher, Rabbi Yehuda Berg. Here are some extracts from the article:

We don't seek out celebrities. They come and find us, and we treat them the same as everyone else who wants to study Kabbalah. Demi Moore just walked in one day and we welcomed her. With Madonna, it was the same. A teacher was giving a class, and she sat down to listen with everyone else. That was six years ago, and she still is a serious student.
Madonna has reportedly given millions of pounds to help establish the centre in Oxford Street. 'We're always there for Madonna,' Berg says, modestly. 'We have given her a support system. If she has any questions, she can get in touch with me any time, or we can send her to a study group. But you don't have to be Madonna to get this kind of attention. Anyone can contact me. I spend half my time on the phone or answering e-mails.'
So why are celebrities investing so heavily in the cause? What's in it for them?.
In Madonna's case, it seems to be acceptance. According to Berg, she likes the world of Kabbalah because all the teachers make her feel at ease and don't regard her in the light of her fame. 'That's what she told us. It happened the first time she came to one of our classes. Nobody stopped what they were doing or said anything special to her. She was treated like the other students, and she said that it was the first time she felt accepted for herself.'
Berg says that studying Kabbalah has changed the singer's life and made her a much happier person. 'She thinks that she has become more patient, a better and more understanding parent, and a more loving wife. Communication is the key. Kabbalah has taught her to be open with others and to understand their needs as well as her own.'

Bay City's favorite Material Girl spotted back in town
Posted: 11 August 2003

From the Bay City Times:
The customer in the Bay City candy store didn't have to strike a pose for clerk Kristi L. Loiselle to realize it was pop-singing superstar Madonna.
The Bay City-born Material Girl bought a cellophane bag of Red-Hot Dollars - gummy raspberry-flavored candy - and salt-water taffy inside the St. Laurent Bros. store on Wednesday afternoon, according to Loiselle.
'I didn't really notice her walk in because I was waiting on someone else, but then (clerk) Marcie (Cervantes) came over and said 'Madonna just walked in,' said Loiselle, 18, who works at the store at 1101 N. Water St.
'At first I thought Marcie was kidding, but then I looked and saw (Madonna's husband) Guy Ritchie, too,' Loiselle said. 'You can tell it's Madonna by her arms, because she's real buff and she was wearing a dusty blue tank top. She kept saying 'Oh Guy, look at this' and 'Guy, look at that.'
'Once I realized it was her, I was in shock. I was, like, 'Oh my gosh.' You don't really see anything else around you. You don't really notice any other customers after that.'
Madonna and her husband, were accompanied by a muscular man who followed the couple and drove them away in a navy blue Chevrolet Suburban after the Queen of Pop made her purchase at about 4 p.m., said Loiselle, of Hampton Township.
Loiselle said Cervantes, a Madonna fan, first recognized the singer and waited on Ritchie - who spoke with a British accent - and Madonna.
Sarah A. Nievierowski, 19, of Bay City, who also was working at the St. Laurent Bros. store when the couple walked in, said she recognized Ritchie as well as Madonna.
'I know what he looks like,' Nievierowski said, 'and Madonna has a distinctive voice and you know it's her when you hear it.'
Nievierowski said Madonna wore a beret in a way that covered part of the singer's face, with Madonna's blonde hair tied in a ponytail. Loiselle said the singer also wore light blue cotton Capri pants.
Nievierowski said that after Marcie Cervantes, 19, rang up Madonna's purchase on the cash register, Cervantes asked if Madonna would sign autographs for her and Nievierowski.
'That's when the bodyguard guy spoke up and said 'Now's not really a good time for it,' Nievierowski said.
Nievierowski said Madonna and Ritchie, and the other man, shopped for about 10 minutes inside the venerable St. Laurent Bros. store, a longtime favorite haunt for candy lovers on Bay City's East Side. Madonna bought $7.83 worth of candy, Nievierowski said.
Only about five other customers were in the store when Madonna shopped there, Loiselle said.
'I don't think the other customers even recognized Madonna at first,' Nievierowski said. 'While I was waiting on her there was this other customer, an older guy, right behind her and I remember thinking 'You probably don't realize you're standing right behind Madonna.'
There are a number of landmarks connecting Madonna to Bay City, including Visitation Catholic Church, where her parents were married; the old Mercy Hospital where Madonna was born and where her mother died of breast cancer; and Calvary Cemetery, where Madonna's mother and two uncles are buried.
Although Madonna - born Madonna Ciccone in Bay City in 1958 - once called Bay City 'a stinky little town' on the 'Today' show, Nievierowski said she and Marcie Cervantes were thrilled to see her in person.
'When she walked in the store the first thing I thought was 'Wow, that woman looks like Madonna,' and Marcie said she thought the same thing, so we were thinking it was probably her,' Nievierowski said.
'I think Madonna and Guy (Ritchie) knew that we knew who they were, because I was blushing and so was Marcie, and Marcie said Guy was kind of looking over at us and kind of laughing.'
'While they were in the store, I remember Guy saying something about 'Good old St. Laurent's.' I'm assuming they've been in there before. It's kind of neat to think Madonna was there before.'
'I wonder if she comes to Bay City now and then, and nobody really knows.'

Paris launch for The English Roses
Posted: 06 August 2003

From bbc.co.uk:
Madonna will travel to Paris to launch the first of her children's books, it has been announced.
The English Roses will be published simultaneously in 100 countries in 30 languages on 15 September.
It is about 'feeling green with envy, blue with loneliness, pink with embarrassment, purple with rage and how to find true-blue friends', its publisher has said.
The singing superstar has signed a deal to write five books for children aged six and above.
They will be based on Hebrew texts she is studying from the Kabbalah religion and each will feature the work of a different, celebrated illustrator.
The singer will be joined by 40 book editors from around the world at the offices of her French publishing house Gallimard to celebrate the first release.
Madonna, who has two children, has criticised what she called 'vapid and vacant' books that offered no lessons in life for younger readers.
Aged 44, she remains a top-selling recording artist after 20 years in the music business.

Missy Talks Back: Madonna & Me
Posted: 04 August 2003

From New York Metro:
After reading our item last week in which we reported that she and Madonna didn’t hit it off right while filming their new Gap ads, Missy Elliott called us up to explain that she wasn’t herself that day because of a personal crisis.
'Madonna came to me and asked what was wrong, and I told her in a roundabout way,' she told us. 'She called her spiritual adviser over the day of the shoot; he gave me, like, the red string, and he prayed for me. The rest of the shoot was fine....I would never disrespect her.'

Maverick conceives an Invisible film
Posted: 04 August 2003

From Yahoo!:
Christian Ford, who last directed 'Slow Burn' with Minnie Driver and James Spader, is developing the supernatural drama 'Invisible.'
The indie project is about a young woman, living in New York City, who, struggling against insignificance, feels invisible to those around her. The more she thinks about it, the more she becomes invisible - literally - only to discover that she's not the only one; there is a whole society of shadowy souls.
Ford will direct 'Invisible' from a script he is co-writing with Roger Soffer. It was originally conceived in-house at Madonna's Maverick Films, which is producing the project with Cosmic Entertainment, the banner headed by Goldie Hawn, her partner Kurt Russell, and her children Kate and Oliver Hudson.

Madonna is also credited as executive producer on the new film Agent Cody Banks starring Frankie Muniz and Hilary Duff.

Get Into The GAP in London
Posted: 03 August 2003 EXCLUSIVE

Following on from the great monogrammed cords event at GAP's flagship store in New York, Madonnalicious can reveal the same kind of event is planned for London when the Madonna and Missy campaign starts in Europe on 20 August.

An insider revealed that 'Europe will be very involved in the M&M campaign and the European press office has a great embroidery (monogrammed cords?) event planned for London on August 22.'

No news on which London store will hold the event, but it looks like those fans in London may get a chance to get the promotional CD and monogrammed cords when the campaign starts in Europe - and only three months after the HMV concert, it looks like Madonna-mania may hit central London again!

Missy and Madge get frosty?
Posted: 02 August 2003

From People News:
All may not be what it seems between Madonna and NBF (New Best Friend) Missy Elliot according to reports, the relationship was frosty on the set of their recent Gap egofest. Madge refused to be 'out-blinged' by Missy and according to reports in the New York Metro magazine, Missy was determined to 'out-diva' the Material girl.
Missy kept Her Madge waiting 45 minutes while she sat in her car chatting on her mobile and then when the singer tapped on the window to encourage her to hurry up - Elliott reportedly dismissed her with a flick of the hand. The rapper then snubbed an invitation to go back to Madge's LA pad. Despite gushing, 'I always dreamed of working with Madonna because I always thought that if I had any kind of connection with another artist it would be Madonna.'
The magazine claims Elliott only cooperated with Madonna - who has been paid $10 million to promote Gap - when handlers advised her it was in her best interests. Oh the fickle world of celebrity friendships.
