She is very fascinating
Posted: 30 March 2005 - From contactmusic.com

Boy George just can't seem to stop talking about Madonna, this time he admits he is jealous of her. However this may all have something to do with the fact he has a book out and has to publicise it, and what better way to get yourself in the press than by talking about Madonna!

Pop stalwart Boy George has tempered his bitter feud with Madonna by confessing he's jealous of the Material Girl's standing as the number one gay icon.
The Karma Chameleon star infuriated Madonna last month when he slammed her for embracing the Kabbalah, the mystical offshoot of Judaism, claiming it preaches that homosexuality is a disease.
Madonna hit back, vehemently denying the Kabbalah is homophobic.
But rather than further fuel their war of words, openly homosexual George admits he's fascinated by Madonna's ever-changing image and outlook on life - and is a little jealous of her high position in gay culture.
He says, 'It would be dishonest to say that there wasn't a degree of jealousy, not that it's something I lose sleep over. I don't think about her day and night.'
'If someone like Madonna changes her morality and her stance on things people just accept it, whereas somebody else would be dragged over the coals for doing that. That amazes me and it is fascinating. She is very fascinating.'

No disrespect intended
Posted: 29 March 2005

The controversy surrounding Madonna and Guy's choice of Purim party costumes continues to run in the US press. Guy dressing as The Pope has caused outrage in some Catholic circles, expecially as The Pope is in ill health at the moment.
A picture of Madonna and Guy dressed as a nun and the Pope was splashed across the front page of the New York Post this morning.

Madonna's publicist Liz Rosenberg said:
They went to a costume party. There wasn't disrespect intended at all. That's just somebody looking for a problem when there isn't one.

She's still a nun at heart
Posted: 29 March 2005 - From contactmusic.com

Madonna and her husband Guy Ritchie celebrated the Jewish holiday of Purim in an unusual manner on Thursday - by dressing up as a nun and the Pope.
The couple were spotted on the streets of London as they made their way to a Kabbalah party to celebrate the holiday, which commemorates the day Queen Esther saved the Jewish people living in ancient Persia from extermination.
Madonna's publicist, Liz Rosenberg, tells MTV, 'Yes, she was dressed as a nun and Guy was dressed as the pope. Some Catholic groups are saying stuff, but Purim is a joyous holiday occasion.'
'Madonna and Guy had a great time drinking and dancing. It's funny, because she said that she was happy that the pictures of her are out there because her father would be so proud. She said that when she was a girl she wanted to be a nun and she guesses that she's still a nun at heart.'

More pictures from the video shoot
Posted: 27 March 2005

UK newspaper the Daily Star featured three pictures of Madonna at her video shoot in West London on Friday. Madonna is shown arriving in a black outfit and later in two evening dresses during the video shoot.

Clearly a lot of effort has been put into the costumes which Madonna will be wearing in her new music video. But there is one person who is less-than-impressed at what her mum is wearing - Madge's eight-year-old daughter Lourdes.
Mum arrived in a smart black get-up before putting on some cleavage bearing frocks. The 46-year-old Like A Virgin singer spent more time changing her outfits than actually singing when she recorded the film in West London. But then she is a Material Girl.

A flash in the pan?
Posted: 27 March 2005 - From the Sunday Express

A one-off Sky One TV program 50 Terrible Predictions looks at the worst predictions ever made throughout history, included is the prediction that Madonna would be a flash-in-the-pan!

At the start of her career Madonna was dismissed as a flash in the pan.
Warner Brothers UK would not pay her train fare to appear on TV show The Tube in 1984 as she was not seen as a priority act.

She is currently the most successful female chart act of all time, with worldwide sales in excess of 140 million records, has amassed an unequalled 35 consecutive UK Top 10 singles and her earnings are said to be in excess of £215 million.

Madonna: What's a Desperate Housewife?
Posted: 24 March 2005 - From contactmusic.com

Pop queen Madonna has dashed the dreams of Desperate Housewives fans hoping she would make a cameo appearance - she is actually totally unaware of the hit show's existence.
Rumours that the Material Girl was keen to appear in the series have been proved false, and it seems the British-based icon is too preoccupied with her devotion to Kabbalah to watch TV.
Her spokesperson tells website THE SCOOP, 'I can guarantee you that she's not even familiar with the show.'

I wanted to capture the essence of Madonna
Posted: 24 March 2005 - From contactmusic.com

Pop beauty Gwen Stefani had one intention when she made her debut album Love Angel Music Baby - to filter the favourite sounds of her childhood through contemporary producers like Dr Dre.
Stefani wanted to capture the essence of dancing to Madonna and Depeche Mode in the 1980s, and decided the best way to go about that would be to enlist the talents of pals like The Neptunes' Pharrell Williams and Outkast star Andre 3000.
She says, 'I used to go dancing at Disneyland because there was a club in there and I lived across the street so I'd sneak in.'
'I love all that music even though I couldn't admit it then. Imagine, like Madonna had just come out, no-one had ever seen her before. It was like, 'Who the f**k is that?'
'I wasn't into all that at the time - Madonna and Depeche Mode - but as I grew up I realised that all that music, the stuff that was popular at the time, was the backdrop of my life.'
'So I wanted to take that music and make it into a modern record that made me feel good but make it with modern people from the clubs today like Dre and Andre 3000 and Pharrell.'

No diva to play another diva!
Posted: 24 March 2005 - From the Evening Standard

The Material Girl was up for the part of French disco singing-legend Dalida in a lavish mini-series for French TV. But the role ultimately went to Italian actress Sabrina Ferelli.
'The producers didn't want a diva to play another diva, ' says a source close to the production.

Early Madonna: Crimes of Passion
Posted: 21 March 2005

Bruce Baron sent in this excerpt from the Electronic Musician interview with songwriter David Frank about the early Madonna demo-song Crimes of Passion.
Bruce has added his extra notes about the history of this song:

....but Lou said, 'Why don't you do a song? You know, a dance song, a 12-inch. Just get a singer, you can do it!'
Frank programmed a song in a few weeks, but he still needed a singer. Why not ask the girl upstairs?, he thought. 'The girl upstairs was Madonna,' Frank explains. 'This was in 1981, before she had a record deal. We were in a pickup band together, and she was the singer. We rehearsed in the same building, called the Music Building, on 37th Street and 8th Avenue. I was actually paid to write with her. I made $30 for four hours of work,' he laughs.
Frank had only the title for the song, 'Crimes of Passion.' He brought in the future mogul to write some words and a melody. Then fate intervened. 'We were all set to do it. But the night before we were going to cut the song, Madonna called me and asked if Steve Bray, her drummer, could be in on the session as coproducer. I love Steve, but I knew he would want to put guitars on the track. I had visualized it as a synth-only song, which was still a bit of a novelty at that time.'
The conflict meant that Madonna was out. 'I called up Mic Murphy, a singer I knew,' Frank continues. 'He wrote a new melody for the song and changed the words to 'In Times of Passion.' We recorded and mixed all of it in one day. He took it to a friend of his, who cut an acetate, a 12-inch, and we got a record deal with Atlantic the next day.'

Bruce Baron notes:
Madonna and Bray obviously did their own version whch appeared on the release 'Pre-Madonna'.
Mic Murphy and David Frank went on to form the pop duo The System. They charted several dance hits including 'Don't Disturb This Groove'.
Mic Murphy is credited as a co-writer to the 'Erotica' era unreleased Madonna song 'Dear Father' along with Andre Betts. Mic Murphy also played with Bray and Madonna during her early demo days.
David Frank co-wrote Christina Aguilera's hit 'Genie In A Bottle'.
Stephen Bray recently wrote songs with Brenda Russell for the muscial 'The Color Purple'.

Welsh singer-songwriter Jem spoke to BBC News about her career and spoke about what it felt like to write Nothing Fails for Madonna:

'It was just too crazy to comprehend,' she said when she was asked how she felt about Madonna selecting her song. 'It was just so incredible.'

After graduating, she returned to Wales to record demos and then worked with producer Guy Sigsworth, who she wrote the song Nothing Fails with, which was used by Madonna on her American Life album.

Liz sets the record straight....again
Posted: 14 March 2005 - From MSNBC's The Scoop

Looks like Madonna may return to the silver screen.
The spiritual girl is being coached by her Kabbalah advisers that now would be a good time to get back into acting in a big way, says a well-placed source.
'There was some hope that she might become the main pitchwoman for Kabbalah energy drink, but then it was decided that now was the opportune time for her to further her acting career,' says the insider. 'So they’re hoping that Ashton Kutcher will step up to the plate and pitch it.'
Madonna’s rep dismisses the talk. 'I’ve heard this rumor before. I can’t imagine where it came from,' Liz Rosenberg told The Scoop. 'Madonna is currently in the studio working on a new album, editing a documentary film of her last tour, working on a sequel to The English Roses, her best selling children’s book and of course busy with her family. I wouldn’t rule out acting in her future but her plate seems pretty full at the moment.'

Does he ever have anything nice to say?
Posted: 11 March 2005

Liz Rosenberg certainly has had a busy few days answering back in the press, here is what she had to say in the PageSix column in the New York Post today:

Madonna is firing back at Boy George after the '80s pop star blasted her for cynically bilking her gay fans.
George says Madonna's devotion to Kabbalah is the ultimate act of hypocrisy. 'It's ironic that she's joined an organization that says homosexuality is a disease that can be cured and no one picks her up on it,' George told the London Times. 'After making all those millions of dollars out of gay people, pretending to kiss girls, pretending to be a lesbian! I think she's cynical.'
But Madonna's rep, Liz Rosenberg, says George is the one being cynical. 'There's not enough room on PAGE SIX to respond to Boy George's ridiculous accusations,' she told our Jared Paul Stern, 'much less list Madonna's long-standing passion, love, commitment and devotion to the gay community which has not changed for 20 years.'
Rosenberg insists Kabbalah does 'not discriminate against homosexuals, nor do they work toward changing anyone's sexual preference. I wish Boy George would go back to writing songs....Does he ever have anything nice to say about anyone?'

Madonna: Wanted for AmFAR photoshoot
Posted: 07 March 2005

Liz Smith's column in the NY Post today mentions that Madonna is one of several stars wanted for an AmFAR photograph to help promote AIDs awareness:

Kenneth Cole, the handsome, smart new chairman of the board of AmFAR, was out in Hollywood last Oscar weekend. We ran into him at Elton John's jammed-to-the-rafters fete. But Kenneth, accompanied by his terrific wife, Maria Cuomo, wasn't there simply to party. He was networking and corralling stars for his big idea - a photograph, which will be published in December on World AIDS Day, of all the prominent scientists and activists who have given time, money, heart and soul to the cause. Mark Seliger is taking the pictures.
So far Kenneth - who is putting his own money into this effort - has snared Greg Louganis, Tom Hanks, Rosie O'Donnell, Elton John and David Furnish, Desmond Tutu, Dr. David Ho, Dr. Suniti Solomon, Harry Belfonte, Sharon Stone and, but of course, Miss Elizabeth Taylor, the woman who started it all back in 1985 when she co-founded AmFAR with Dr. Mathilde Krim. Madonna is in Cole's sight-line, among others. (Stars who can't get together at the same time will later be digitally joined in the massive picture.)
Kenneth Cole is working to attract a young, hot star to AmFAR's cause. AIDS infection rates have risen alarmingly among young people who don't remember the bad old days, and think, absurdly, even if they are infected, drugs can 'cure' them.

Madonna Wanted For Tsunami-Relief Album
Posted: 05 March 2005 - From MTV.com - thanks to Sarah

A consortium of Sri Lankan musicians is trying to recruit the likes of Elton John, Madonna and Ricky Martin to lend their support to the tsunami-relief effort in the form of song contributions that will appear on a benefit album already in the works.
Funds raised through sales of the record will aid rebuilding efforts in countries devastated by the December 26 catastrophe, The Associated Press reports.
Asoka Gunawardena, a spokesperson for United Artists of Sri Lanka, told the wire service that the group is eyeing a March 26 release date for One Nation, One World, One Love. The album would hit store shelves exactly three months after the disaster occurred.
'This album is produced as a tribute to all those who passed and all those who came for our help in this worst natural disaster,' Gunawardena told reporters Wednesday.
The assemblage of Sri Lankan artists has reached out to several U.S. music label representatives for contributions, the AP reports. The 18-song album will also feature singers from Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Somalia and the Maldives. Tsunami Relief&'58; What You Can Do To Help
Gunawardena said that sales of the compilation will support the construction of schools in the recovering region, as well as the erection of a memorial in Sri Lanka, one of the hardest-hit areas.

Madonna: One of five essential acts
Posted: 01 March 2005 - Thanks to Queen Bitch

The April issue of UK music magazine Q features Madonna as one of the Five Essential Acts in music. Madonna is joined in this list by The Beatles, Bob Dylan, U2 and The Velvet Underground.

The magazine lists Like A Prayer as her definitive album saying:
And if you only buy one album....Like A Prayer. Always more interesting when not seeking novelty, Madonna hit artistic and commercial gold with Like A Prayer, her best and least contrived album. The title track, all swirling choruses and kitchen-sink production, remains her major statement, but Express Yourself was ferocious dance, while on the rarely lauded Dear Jessie she had never sounded so human.

The magazine also lists what they consider to be Madonna's essential singles:
Holiday, Borderline, Material Girl, Like A Virgin, Crazy For You, Into The Groove, Papa Don't Preach, La Isla Bonita, Open Your Heart, Live To Tell, Who's That Girl, Causing A Commotion, Vogue, Justify My Love, Ray Of Light, Frozen, Drowned World/Substitute For Love, Beautiful Stranger, Music, Hollywood.
